Grand Island’s sandstone shores form a distinctive winter ice-climbing destination near Munising. The west side and East Channel are community-mapped climbing sectors. Island access is the deciding part of the trip: passenger ferries do not operate in winter, and lake ice can be unsafe or absent. Arrange suitable access with a local operator and check current Forest Service guidance. The mainland landing is a planning point, not a marked crossing. NPS advises against crossing from Sand Point to the island’s thumb because of hazardous currents. Airport driving estimates stop on the mainland; they do not include island travel.
